Indicator Netspeed doesn't detect the currently used network interface and by default it selects wlan0. So the first time you run it, select the network interface you're using from the indicator menu!

Once installed, start the applet via:

indicator-netspeed &

You need to manually add this applet into Startup Applications (open it from Unity Dash).

If you do not want to add the repository or want to try to install on other Debian-based distribution, you can take the DEB file program this link and install it manually (by double - clicking on it).
But remember! By opting for this type of installation, you will not receive any updates of the program.
